Tips For Capturing Amazing Photos During A Helicopter Ride

Taking photos from a helicopter is a great way to capture breathtaking scenery from above. The right preparation helps in getting the best shots. Wearing dark clothing reduces reflections on windows, while adjusting camera settings ensures clear images. Using a wide-angle lens allows for a broader view of landscapes. Planning the best time for the flight, such as during sunrise or sunset, adds a beautiful touch to the pictures.

Choose the right camera settings:

Before you even board the Atlantis helicopter tour, ensure your camera or smartphone is set up for success. Use a fast shutter speed to avoid motion blur, as the helicopter will be moving. A shutter speed of 1/1000 or higher is often ideal for aerial photography. If you’re using a smartphone, check that your camera app is set to the highest resolution and that the focus is correct before the ride begins.

Use a polarising filter:

If your camera allows, consider using a polarising filter. This can help reduce glare from the helicopter window and improve the clarity of your shots. A polariser helps reduce reflections, allowing the colors and details of the landscape below to stand out more. This is particularly useful when photographing water, clouds, or cityscapes from above.

Shoot through the window:

Most helicopter rides take place in enclosed cabins with windows, which can sometimes create reflections. To avoid this, press your camera lens gently against the window to minimise reflections and achieve sharper images. Be mindful of your angle, as the more directly you position the camera, the less you’ll have to worry about glare.

Frame your shots wisely:

Aerial photography offers wide views of landscapes, but it’s important to focus on composition. Frame your shots by including interesting foreground elements like roads, rivers, or buildings alongside the expansive background. Rule of thirds is a useful technique here: try to place important elements off-centre for a more balanced and visually appealing shot.

Capture movement:

Helicopters offer the chance to capture active movement, whether it’s the rotation of the blades or the movement of the helicopter itself. Try taking some photos while the helicopter is turning or ascending to add a sense of motion to your shots. Experiment with different angles to capture the depth of the scene.
